And in the end France won.
What about the Bolão? The win by France catapulted pcasal3 to the 1st place. Professor Slump jumped up to the 2nd place and LucasA and Xandinho share the 3rd place. Cabeça de Macaco finished pretty decently this time, on place 144. The complete standings are here.

All's well that ends well
The game for the 3rd place today was played in St Petersburg, which means that Achilles the deaf cat, who lives in that city, had to make a prediction. He hesitantly predicted a win by Belgium and closed his World Cup prediction season with a success after three failures in a row. All's well that ends well.
Of course, tomorrow is the big final and we will know who the champion is... of the World Cup and -more importantly- of the Bolão da Copa. Currently, at the top of our standings, LucasA is still 1st, pcasal3 is 2nd, and Papa Patrick is 3rd. Here are the complete standings.

The other semifinal
Verdammt nochmal! I shouldn't have used the old columns by Loose Tooth from the 2006 World Cup to plan my travels through Germany in 2018. When I started out the day in Bad Soden am Taunus this morning, little did I know that twelve hours later I would still be in the middle of Bavaria on a train wagon that had plenty of beer to drown my sorrows, but no working internet connection to see the Croatia-England game. When I finally arrived in Munich, the game was over and I was told that Croatia had won against England in overtime.
There are no changes in the top three: LucasA is still 1st, pcasal3 is 2nd, and Papa Patrick is 3rd. I challenge you to spot changes anywhere in the complete standings over here.
The clearest image I could get of the game with my internet connection (I think it may be the first goal by Croatia) |

France is the first finalist
Achilles the deaf cat predicted that Belgium would win..., so naturally France advanced into the final.
The win by France broke the tie in the third place and shuffled things around at places 2 and 3: LucasA is still 1st but pcasal3 moved up to the 2nd place and Papa Patrick is now 3rd. The complete standings are here.

England and Croatia advance
Two European teams were eliminated today (of course, some people will surely argue that this is because there are only European teams left in the tournament). In the first game today, Sweden (the survivor of the infamous Sweden-Swizerland elimination game) was easily dispatched by England. The second game pitted the host team Russia against Croatia. Russia and Croatia played well. The game was highly entertaining and when it looked like Croatia had already won, Russia came right back into the game (with a goal scored by a native South American, I must add). In the end, Croatia prevailed in the penalty shootout.
There are no changes at the top of the standings. LucasA is 1st, Papa Patrick is 2nd, and pcasal3 and Will and Carlos (TCW) are tied in the 3rd place. The complete standings are here.

France and Belgium advance
France and Belgium advanced today, eliminating the only two South American teams left in the tournament: Uruguay and Brazil. In the France-Uruguay match, a nice gesture by Griezmann was that he did not celebrate his goal against Uruguay because, according to himself, he feels "half-Uruguayan". The Belgians did not have similar gestures with Brazil.
In our competition, LucasA is 1st, Papa Patrick is 2nd, and pcasal3 and Will and Carlos (TCW) are tied in the 3rd place. The complete standings are here.

Sweden and England
In the first of today's games Sweden played against Switzerland. None of these teams ought to be in the World Cup at this stage, so it was efficient to have a game to eliminate at least one of them. Today it was Switzerland's turn. The game was played in St. Petersburg and, therefore, it was one of those games on which Achilles customarily makes predictions. Today he was mistaken again and Cabeça de Macaco was briefly amused by this turn of events... but only until he found out that in the second game England defeated Colombia in the penalties. Terrible news for our beloved monkey mascot, who had predicted that Colombia would win the World Cup!
A notable event in the Colombia-England game was the penalty awarded to Kane after what looked more like an offensive foul commited by himself. In any case, Kane is now the top scorer in the World Cup with 6 goals.
In today's standings, LucasA is 1st, Papa Patrick 2nd, and Will and Carlos (TCW) 3rd. A Man Like Trump is just one point behind, on the 4th place. The complete standings are here.

Brazil and Belgium
After yesterday's two boring games, today we reverted to more exciting games. In the Brazil-Mexico game, Neymar's decision to remove the food from his head seems to have made him a better player and he participated in both of his team's goals.
In the other game, Belgium managed to turn around the match and ended up winning 3-2 against a very inspired Japanese team.
The top-3 in our standings are the same as yesterday: LucasA, Papa Patrick, and Helena Perrone. Also, take a look at the complete standings.

Penalties
In the first of today's two tedious games, Spain tried to bore the Russian team into defeat by endlessly passing the ball back and forth without ever getting near the goal. The Russians valiantly resisted by doing absolutely nothing until the penalty shootout finally put a stop the whole thing. The next game, Croatia-Denmark was more or less the same, although the many catches of penalty shots by the goalkeepers provided some excitement.
In today's standings, LucasA is 1st, Papa Patrick is 2nd, and Helena Perrone is 3rd. For the rest, check the complete standings.

The 2nd round begins
The two games today were highly interesting right until the end. Argentina and France both played their best games in the tournament so far (this was actually not that difficult to achieve) and France ended up advancing to the next round. In the other game, Uruguay beat Portugal with an excellent performance by Cavani, who scored two goals before leaving the field because of an injury. France and Uruguay will face each other in the quarterfinals next Friday. Because their teams were eliminated, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have by now played their last match in the tournament and lost their chance to be the top goal scorers.
In our competition, LucasA is currently 1st, Papa Patrick 2nd, and Helena Perrone 3rd. The updated complete standings are conveniently compiled for your viewing here.

Last day of the first stage
There were no major surprises in the games that were played today. But there were changes at the top of our classification table. Papa Patrick, who had been leading the standings since June 17th, dropped to the 4th position. LucasA is now 1st, Micaela and Will and Carlos (TCW) 2nd. What about the rest of you? Check for yourself by looking at the complete standings here.

Major surprise
Wow! Germany lost. Who would have expected that?
The answer is Caipi Connie, the only participant who correctly predicted that Germany would lose today. Playing at the same time, Mexico lost 3-0 against Sweden. Mexican players did everything in their power to try to get out of the World Cup and return to Mexico, including scoring an own goal, but it didn't work because the Germans did not do their part.
In the two other games, Brazil won comfortably against Serbia, and Costa Rica and Switzerland tied.
In our competition, Papa Patrick is 1st, Micaela 2nd, and Federico Sch is 3rd. The complete standings are here.

Achilles strikes out
Groups C and D came to an end today. In group C, Peru put continent-hopping Australia in their place and beat them by 2-0. France and Denmark tied 0-0, making it the first game without goals in the World Cup. In group D, Croatia won against Iceland and Argentina against Nigeria. The win by Argentina was correctly predicted by 107 participants, including Cabeça de Macaco, but not by Achilles the deaf cat, who had so far had 100% accuracy in his World Cup predictions but chose Nigeria this time.
As in the last several days, Papa Patrick and Micaela are in the first two positions. Iliana and Will and Carlos (TCW) are tied in the third place. The complete standings are here.

Groups A and B
The last games of Groups A and B were played today. Uruguay beat Russia 3-0 and ended up 1st in Group A. In group B, the end result was uncertain right until the very end. In the game with Morocco, Spain went from being at risk to be eliminated to 1st in the group in a short matter of time. Portugal was 2nd. Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score a penalty shot that could have helped Portugal to be 1st in the group and that would have also put him at the top of the table of top goal scorers.
Papa Patrick, Micaela, and Daniela Moura retain the top three positions. The complete standings are available here.

Last day of second games
Today was the last day of the second-game round. Poland, the favorite in Group H, was eliminated after losing to Colombia. The other notable event was the 6-1 win of England over Panama. Panama, one of the weakest teams in the World Cup, had already lost 3-0 to Belgium but today marked an important event because Panama scored its first goal in a World Cup. Congratulations!
Papa Patrick is 1st, Micaela 2nd, and Helena Perrone 3rd. The complete standings are here.

Three exciting games
The three games today were all very interesting. There were lots of goals in the Belgium - Tunisia (5-2) game and excitement until the end in Mexico - Korea (2-1) and Germany - Sweden (2-1). Germany just barely managed to score a goal in the last minute to keep itself in the World Cup.
"A good kick in the face is the best letter of recommendation" (Swedish proverb) |

VAR and penalties
Wins by Brazil, Nigeria, and Switzerland today. The VAR made an appearance in the Brazil - Costa Rica game and denied Neymar a penalty (which should have been awarded according to the time-honored tradition of the dubious penalty rule). The VAR did award a penalty to Iceland in the game against Nigeria... but in Group D they don't like to accept penalty kicks and they usually shoot them out on purpose.
What happened in today's standings? In the top-4 we find exactly the same people as yesterday (Papa Patrick 1st, Micaela 2nd, pcasal3 3rd, Daniela Moura 4th). Where is the rest? Right here.

June solstice
Today Denmark tied 1-1 with Australia and France won 1-0 against Peru. The big surprise today was the 3-0 win of Croatia against Argentina. It was only predicted by 13 Bolão participants (among them Cabeça de Macaco), although nobody got the exact score right.
Papa Patrick is 1st, Micaela 2nd, and pcasal3 is 3rd. Cabeça de Macaco is on place 143. The complete standings are here.

Uruguay nomá
All of today's games ended 1-0 and there were no major surprises. The 1-0 win of Uruguay against Saudi Arabia was maybe the most boring game of the World Cup so far but as a result we now know that both Russia and Uruguay advance to the second stage. Although we still don't know in what order (maybe Achilles does).
In the standings there were some interesting movements. There is now a tie at the top: Micaela and Papa Patrick share the 1st place with 118 points and they are followed closely by Angie and Chepa, who are tied on 3rd place with 106 points. What about you? Search for your name in the standings here.

Achilles gets it right again
Today's games started out with a surprise loss by Colombia against Japan. Surprising indeed as only 4 Bolão participants predicted that Japan would win. Then Senegal won against Poland, as expected by 27 participants, and Russia against Egypt, as predicted by 44 participants, and by Achilles, the deaf cat... Actually, who knows what he predicted:
Congratulations to Papa Patrick and Micaela who continue to lead the standings. Chepa has now joined them in the 3rd place. Cabeça de Macaco is down to position 144. The complete standings are here.
In any case, it was a bad day for Cabeça de Macaco, who didn't score a single point today. In fact, his predicted final is Colombia-Germany, which didn't look like a bad choice ex-ante but has lost some of its appeal given the last results.Achilles was tasked with predicting the winner in the Russia-Egypt encounter later tonight. The cat, as soon as he was presented with the two bowls, rushed to eat from the Russian bowl. But in a mood to puzzle the spectators, Achilles also ate from the bowl with the Egyptian flag. While the organizers are confident that he predicted a Russia win, is the cat hinting at a draw? Maybe he was predicting that Russia would score first but Egypt would equalize later? Or maybe he was just hungry and latched on to whatever food he got, without caring about which bowl he ate from first.
It is a sad day for macacos |

A new record
Finally, Super-Angie scored some points today. So far, this participant had managed to maintain a score of zero for the first four days of competition, breaking a new record at the Bolão da Copa. Congratulations! Not even Cabeça de Macaco had been able to do that (Incidentally, for those of you who asked about this, read this old newsletter to learn how Cabeça de Macaco makes his random predictions). [Her alter ego Angie is doing much better at place 4]
Today's wins of Sweden, Belgium and England left us with the following configuration at the top: Papa Patrick and Micaela continue in the first two positions and Paulinho is now 3rd. Cabeça de Macaco, who didn't profit from the last-minute goal of England, drops to position 142. The full standings are here.
Is this a picture of Super-Angie? Why didn't she use her superpowers against Mexico? |

More surprises
Wow. What is happening?
After the comfortable 5-0 win for Russia in the opening game nothing is going as expected: France barely won against Australia, Argentina tied with Iceland, Germany lost with Mexico, Brazil tied with Switzerland...
Is there an evil plot to attack the Bolão? Who is behind it? I'm sure it must be a friend of Achilles the deaf cat.
Teams are realizing that they shouldn't have drunk all those cases of vodka sent by this man on the first day of the competition |
Only three people predicted that Germany would lose to Mexico and only 12 predicted the tie between Brazil and Switzerland.
Papa Patrick is now 1st, Micaela is 2nd, and Maud 3rd. Cabeça de Macaco is currently 84th. The complete standings are here.

Four on the third
There were four games today. Lots of opportunities to score points. The biggest surprise today was the tie between Argentina and Iceland, which was only predicted by Cabeça de Macaco and 11 other people.
There are important changes at the top: Paulinho is now 1st, Micaela 2nd, and Quique 3rd. Cabeça de Macaco is 58th. In what position are you? Find the answer here.

Second day
The second day is over... and what an exciting day it was. In the first two games just one goal was scored, right before the end of the match: Egypt 0 - Uruguay 1 and Morocco 0 - Iran 1.
The final game of the day was played between Spain and Portugal. Spain played without their coach, who resigned just before the World Cup started, and without their characteristic red shirt (recall that they lost the right to be called "La Roja" against Chile in the last World Cup). At least, the game had some goals and ended with a 3 - 3 tie.
In the Bolão, Fran and Vero&Juan are now tied in the first place with Quique following closely in the third place. Cabeça de Macaco is 44th. The complete standings are here.

Opening game
And the World Cup begins... Russia won against Saudi Arabia, as predicted by Achilles, the deaf cat, and Cabeça de Macaco. In total, 84 bets, including that of the Macaco predicted that Russia would win and that Saudi Arabia would score zero goals. They are now all placed in first place in our current standings. See here.
Let's see how Achilles fares as the competition progresses. Be careful Achilles! Don't expose your heel or the Macaco is going to randomly throw bananas at it and outpredict you.
